This is Lina Medina, she was the youngest woman to give birth at 5 years old in May 1939. She had a condition known as precocious puberty” this is when sexual development happens at an early age.

Why is no one here worried about the fact that a 5 year old girl was even pregnant in the first place?

2.6k

u/chekole1208 Aug 07 '22

Exactly.... "precocious puberty" doesn't get you pregnant, far as I know, absolutely no condition or illness can get you pregnant without sexual intercourse.

u/Absurdityindex Aug 07 '22

Yes, exactly. And early puberty can be caused by such sexual abuse. Just horrible.

211

u/Forsaken_Thought Aug 07 '22

Wikipedia:

According to Peruvian law, the mere fact of Medina's pregnancy meant that she had been raped at some point before her fifth birthday. Medina has never revealed the identity of the father nor the circumstances of her impregnation. Escomel suggests that she might not know herself, as she "couldn't give precise responses".[1] Lina's father was arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse but released due to lack of evidence.[1]

Yep the books my therapist has recommended touch on this. It made me feel better having a scientific explanation

Also it later leads to a higher likelihood of early/premature menopause. Early happen in your 40s and premature is 30s.

37

u/meowkitten03 Aug 07 '22

Which books has your therapist recommended if you don’t mind me asking? I think they might help me.

40

u/Tashii_Arkrose Aug 07 '22

These first 2 books have amazing depth and scientific explanation of what happens to your mind and body from abuse at a young age. The first has a lot of information from studies and explains it very well for us survivors and focuses on the body keeping a memory of the trauma. It also ties in many different forms of trauma.. which helps since your normally not just traumatized in one way.. sadly.
The second focuses a lot on the mind, emotions and understanding why your reacted in the way you did.

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.

Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker

This last one is a workbook to guide thru the emotional strain that childhood sexual abuse causes.

The Courage to Heal Workbook by Laura Davis

Feel free to DM me if you have trouble finding them. I found the first 2 used on Ebay but I highly recommend getting the Workbook new.

I don't even understand how a baby could carry a baby to term? Like anatomical. The newborn is literally half of her size. Even if the 5 year old has puberty, that doesn't mean their brain or womb is developed to give birth. I'm shocked the fetus didn't abort itself halfway into the pregnancy.

Fucking vile

So, going down the rabbit hole; she was just shy of 5, giving birth at 5 years and 7 months old. She never revealed who raped her, though it’s thought she may just not know for sure. Also, there’s a whole list of the youngest mothers. Lots of them raped by their stepfathers. There’s one, though, a 10 year old, where it says the father was her 13 year old cousin/ex-fiancé. Thought that one was… odd.

198

u/fietsvrouw Aug 07 '22

Thanks for summing all that up. The cousin/fiancé is odd, although in many places, child betrothals are a thing and it is not illegal to marry a first cousin. (I also find that strange...)

It is extremely common for girls to be sexually abused and raped - the estimate is one in 3. I lost the ability to have children when I was 13 because my stepfather raped me.

On a related note, because this often gets swept under the rug, it is believed that the number is the same for boys, but because boys are not supported enough when they come forward, it remains dramatically underreported.

u/rennemarie67 Aug 07 '22

I'm sorry that that happened to you. May I ask what happened to make you unable to have children?

It's a horrendous thing to happen to anyone, but that on top of the ordeal itself must be an utter mindfuck.

What happened to him? Did he get convicted?

96

u/fietsvrouw Aug 07 '22

He gave me an STD, but because my mother's response was to blame me and shut me in the basement, medical care was delayed and it destroyed my fallopian tubes. I have done a lot of work in therapy and am doing great now. You kind words mean a lot.

He was not convicted - I had no adult support in bringing charges, but later in his life he had vascular problems and was impotent, and he is dead now. That is good closure as well.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you. I was never sexually abused, but I was neglected and beaten on a daily basis by my parents, and sometimes their friends, until the state intervened when I was 7. My sister and cousin were both sexually abused, though. My sister still wont tell me whether it was our mother or father, but I know it was one of them. I assume our mother, because our father was hardly home, and when he was, he was usually taking his shit out on me. My cousin only told me like a year ago - about 25 years after the fact - because she was afraid I would have killed the guy. It was her mother’s boyfriend at the time. I never liked him, anyway, she was really young, and I was around 18 - already in the military and wrestled all through high school - so she might have made the right call on that one. Childhood abuse leaves its mark, that’s for sure. I hope you’re doing alright.

It’s amazing she’s still alive today but so outlandish it’s hard to believe it’s true, that some people really are the scum of the earth :(

Her son grew up healthy, but died in 1979 at the age of 40 from bone marrow disease.

31

u/spaceindaver Aug 07 '22

Normally that's a terrible shame, but this is one of the few contexts in which outliving one's child isn't exactly a big surprise

Unless a symptom of precocious puberty is immaculate conception she was raped. This title is horribly wrong and this little girl suffered mightily. Wtf

Strange way of say that a 5 year old got raped and made to carry a baby through pregnancy

340

u/bdsm25 Aug 07 '22

So then she mightev gotten pregnant at 4 years of age. Poor girls been getting mistreated her first few years of life.

144

u/Kinkyregae Aug 07 '22

Her very earliest memories very well may be rape…

She did get pregnant at 4. She gave birth at 5 years and 7 months.

My four year old son is sitting across from me and I just can’t fathom. How horrendous.

Title is problematic because obviously she is not a "woman" at this point. But it (sadly) goes without saying that someone raped her; it's her ability to become pregnant that requires further explanation.

No, she's a child that was clearly raped.

This is not a women with a miraculous medical condition. This is a child living a fucking nightmare. The subtle and overt normalizing of children being sexual instruments is getting grosser than it already was.

23

u/Maditen Aug 07 '22

This ^^^
I'm triggered by the title.

I was raped when I was 7 and I have now been on this post ranting about how disgusting this title is... the wording is so fucking disturbing.

14

u/Ambrosey1 Aug 07 '22

It's triggering for me as well for the same reasons. OP is a heartless cunt for using such a distasteful and disgusting title. He definitely posted it all for internet points and unfortunately it has worked.

I did missionary work in Guatemala. We worked with kids rescued from sex slavery. I know one of the ways precocious puberty happens. It happens when they are repeatedly raped at an early age. It can force the child to go into puberty. The youngest pregnant little girl I've seen was about 9 years old.

46

u/indreality Aug 07 '22

I’m happy to hear there are people like you, out there helping children who need the most protection. But damn am I disgusted that it’s for sex work. It happens too fucking much. Those people need to die, instantly, before they touch any innocent creatures.

She was a girl not a woman. Choosing these words attempts to bias the reader. She was a child that was sexually exploited and assaulted.

131

u/verycherrybombx Aug 07 '22

Yes, and the title also seems to focus more on how interesting her medical condition of precocious puberty was, while glossing over the horror of her young age and the fact that a child was raped (and subsequently made to go through pregnancy and labour).

17

u/Ambrosey1 Aug 07 '22

I know it will make no difference, but that is why I chose to downvote this post. A child's horrific trauma is being passed around like it's just a "fun fact."

u/cardidd-mc Aug 07 '22

She is not a woman, she is a child 🤬

341

u/SadMap7915 Aug 07 '22

I don't care how fast she developed, what sort of low-life thinks it OK to have sex with a five-year-old

404

u/TheWorldInMySilence Aug 07 '22

It's not sex, that's called rape.

90

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '22

Medina has never revealed the identity of the father nor the circumstances of her impregnation. Escomel suggests that she might not know herself, as she "couldn't give precise responses". Lina's father was arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse but released due to lack of evidence.

44

u/CanolaIsMyHome Aug 07 '22

There's literally no way this can be anything other than a form of rape

72

u/Far-Pomegranate-1239 Aug 07 '22

Actually, it’s believed that sustained sexual abuse can cause precocious puberty.

13

u/KilgoRetro Aug 07 '22

What the shit. Wikipedia says she might have started her period as young as 8 months old, and no older than 3.

14

u/maddhatter99 Aug 07 '22

Most likely 4, she was 5 when she gave birth. Even if she didn’t carry it full term, she spent the better part of a year pregnant.

What the fuck, OP u/bendubberley_

Calling a 5 years old child that's been raped AND impregnanted by a sick man as.. a YOUNGEST WOMAN?!

OP is a sick person. 5 years old child is NOT a woman.

u/VoodooDoII Aug 07 '22

If I recall, her son thought she was his sister and didn't know she was his mom.

14

u/barelyworthreading Aug 07 '22

That poor defenseless little girl ❤️

130

u/nowaybacktonormal Aug 07 '22

She was definitely not the youngest woman to give birth as she is only a child, the youngest female to give birth

→ More replies

11

u/bumblebrainbee Aug 07 '22

Ben. That is a child. Why are people referring to children as women or young women? That's a child! Why did you refer to a child as a woman? I don't care about your correction, you did it in the first place. Why?

11

u/Setekh79 Aug 07 '22

This title comes across as though it's trying to normalise paedophilia or something, no mention of HOW she was able to get pregnant or anything, if anything, it makes it sound like the fault is hers for having this 'condition'.

The fuck is wrong with this world!?

88

u/imanoobee Aug 07 '22

OP needs to change the title.
